Who Will win? Maithri Or Mahinda?

The political landscape in Sri Lanka has turned upside down during the last seven days with the announcement made by Mr.Maithripala Sirisena, the former Minister of Health that he would challenge the incumbent President at the next Presidential Election as the common candidate. The President and his government never expected that he would be challenged by the General Secretary of his own political party, the Sri Lanka Freedom Party. Panic stricken President’s family members ran helter- skelter fearing that they would lose power at the forth coming Presidential Election. They pressed some Ministers and MPs  to call press conferences  and deny that they would desert the government. State owned SLBC, Rupavahini and ITN, and the Lake House editors have been instructed to  attack Maithri, Chandrikaand the UNP from morning to late into the night. Racists such as Nalinda Siva, Gunadasa Amarasekara, Bengamuwe Nalaka  have begun  to mislead the public. We can expect all the Sinhala racist organizations such as BBS , Ravana Balaya, Sinhala Rawaya to join forces to launch a vituperative attack against the common candidate as they are aware that the victory of Maithri will be a grave threat to their very existence.
Mahinda MaithriIn the meantime the Minister of Disaster Management  Mr. Mahinda Amaraweera has made an  revealing  statement at a press conference held at the SLFP head office on November 25. According to a news story published in the Daily Mirror he admitted that the UPFA members had  amassed dirty lucre as much as they needed and  as such there is no need for them to continue the  plundering. Therefore, he requested not to defeat the government by voting the opposition candidate. That statement alone shows their fear and confusion. My view is all the government henchmen and most of the government Ministers and deputy Ministers are in mortal fear that Mahinda’s days are numbered.
As there were no crossovers to the Opposition on the final budget day, pro Mahinda Ministers said that there would be no further defections  to the Opposition. Showing to the whole country that pro Mahinda politicians were unaware what was happening behind them, two more UPFA Members of Parliament, namely P.Rajadurai of the Nuwara Eliya district and the UPFA Wanni district MP Hunaiz Farook (ACMC) joined the UNP. In the meantime three pro government Eastern Provincial Council members of Minister Rishard Bathiudeen’s political party, All Ceylon Muslim congress crossed  over to the Opposition on the instructions of their party, which incidentally  may  lead  to capture of power  there by the Opposition. The ACMC was to meet last evening(Saturday) to decide whether to remain with the government or cross to the Opposition. The  Sri Lanka Muslim Congress which is led by Minister Hakeem, an unhappy coalition partner of the UPFA ,will arrive at a decision within the next few days whether to remain with the government or not. They may  take a decision to support Maithri in the event more government MPs rally round the common candidate. UPFA appointed MP Aswar who was a staunch supporter of Mahinda resigned  from the Parliament last evening though his next move is unknown. It looks like that the Muslim community is exerting pressure on pro government Muslim politicians to desert Mahinda.
MP. Mr.Rajitha Senaratne and Venarable Rathana Thera  taking part in the Satana TV programme a week ago said that   many Ministers and Deputy Ministers were  unhappy and frustrated as Mahinda and his  family members have been interfering in their Ministries. My view is some of them are still testing waters to find out whether the sudden change of political weather is going to result in a major flood that will drown Mahinda and his cabal. As Maithri’ is becoming more and more popular every passing day we can expect more government politicians’  defections to Maithri’s camp within the course of next two weeks. It is said  that Mr Jeevan Kumaratunga, the Minister of Postal Services is getting ready to join the Maithri camp. Another interesting development is Miss Hirunika Premachandra  who bagged the highest number of preferential votes in the Colombo district at the last Western Provincial Council elections has praised Maithi as a clean and honest politician. It is most likely that she would join Maithri very soon. Mr. Solangaarachchi ,the chairman of the Kollonnawa Pradesheeya Sabha, a close associate of Hirunika, has already switched his allegiance to the Common candidate.
At the last Presidential Election ,which was held on January 26  2010,the President Mahinda Rajapaksha who was at the peak of his popularity received 57.88% while the Opposition candidate General Sarath Fonsekapolled 40.15% votes.  The other 20 candidates could not even garner at least 0.5% of the total valid votes cast at the election. Today ,after almost five years, one cannot deny the fact that the President is less popular mainly due to his family bandyism, authoritarian rule  and  economic difficulties faced by the poor and the middle class. Due to state sponsored BBS’ anti Muslim hate campaign , Mahinda has become very unpopular among the Muslim community who voted Mahinda overwhelmingly at the last  Presidential election. Though Thondaman promised his loyalty to Mahinda, two of his MPs left him and joined the UNP recently. As such we cannot expect many Indian Tamil votes to Mahinda. Hence it is fair to calculate that his popularity has gone down by around 5 % which means his popularity was around 52% prior to the Maithri earthquake and JHU’s divorce.
Maithri-Rajitha led defections to the Opposition was like a bolt from the blue to Mahinda’s arrogant rule and it has surely eroded Mahinda’s voter base at least by several hundred thousand votes. In case another 10 or 12 government MPs defect to the Opposition it will  probably seal Mahinda’s fate.
However we have to warn the Maithri camp that Mahinda’s regime will do whatever possible to recapture the  power at the election. During the election period we can expect unprecedented violence  to demoralize the activists of the common candidate. Already four violent attacks involving firearms against anti government activists have been unleashed  by pro Mahinda gangs. Those who have earned billions under Mahinda’s regime will not be silent spectators. They will pour more  money to Mahinda’s campaign as they do not want to lose the gold mine. Another possibility is vote rigging. MP Ravi Karunanayake has already complained to the Commissioner of Elections that a National Identity Card printing machine had vanished.
Some have expressed fear that Mahinda would be pressurized  by his close associates not to hand over power to the victorious common candidate. It is advisable for the Maithri camp to be ready for any eventuality. The only way that can defeat any illegal attempt to remain in power is organized people’s power. So far I have not seen any serious attempt made  by the Maithri camp to organize people into a powerful force. It is the responsibility of the political parties and other organizations which support Maithri to organize their followers into a mass organization with branches in every village , town and city not only to prevent vote rigging but also to prevent attempts at  sabotaging  the victory of the common candidate.

    P. Bertie Ranaweerage - RE:Who Will win? Maithri Or Mahinda? Thanks. What can you do to defeat MaRa, the Mara? Write the Common Sense Pamphlet, Sri Lanka version 2014. There will be others to Print and distribute it.Can you write the Common sense Pamphlet? 1. “The political landscape in Sri Lanka has turned upside down during the last seven days with the announcement made by Mr.Maithripala Sirisena, the former Minister of Health that he would challenge the incumbent President at the next Presidential Election as the common candidate.” Yes, MaRa got caught with his pants down. They were going to go against Ranil W or Karu J. 2. ” Racists such as Nalinda Siva, Gunadasa Amarasekara, Bengamuwe Nalaka have begun to mislead the public. We can expect all the Sinhala racist organizations such as BBS , Ravana Balaya, Sinhala Rawaya to join forces to launch a vituperative attack against the common candidate as they are aware that the victory of Maithri will be a grave threat to their very existence.” 3. “According to a news story published in the Daily Mirror he admitted that the UPFA members had amassed dirty lucre as much as they needed and as such there is no need for them to continue the plundering. Bertie Ranaweerage, you have ample materials to write the Sri Lank Version of Common sense Pamphlet , 2014. Thomas OPaine did that for the american revolution with much less materiilas in 1996. Common Sense (pamphlet) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Common_Sense_%28pamphlet%29 Common Sense[1] is a pamphlet written by Thomas Paine in 1775–76 that inspired people in the Thirteen Colonies to declare and fight for independence from Great Britain in the summer of 1776. In clear, simple language it explained the advantages of and the need for immediate independence. It was published anonymously on January 10, 1776, at the beginning of the American Revolution and became an immediate sensation. It was sold and distributed widely and read aloud at taverns and meeting places. Washington had it read to all his troops, which at the time had surrounded the British army in Boston. In proportion to the population of the colonies at that time (2.5 million), it had the largest sale and circulation of any book published in American history.[2] Common Sense presented the American colonists with an argument for freedom from British rule at a time when the question of whether or not to seek independence was the central issue of the day. Paine wrote and reasoned in a style that common people understood. Forgoing the philosophical and Latin references used by Enlightenment era writers, he structured Common Sense as if it were a sermon, and relied on Biblical references to make his case to the people.[3] He connected independence with common dissenting Protestant beliefs as a means to present a distinctly American political identity.[4] Historian Gordon S. Wood described Common Sense as “the most incendiary and popular pamphlet of the entire revolutionary era”.[5]

Hello Birtie (I thought you were British, due to the colonial name!) Anyway, you asked an idiotic qestion to which the peoples’ verdict will come on January 8, clear and loud – Another term for the saviour of the nation, His Excellency mahinda Rajapakse. Still, we strongly endorse Amarasiri’s idea above, of the “Common Sense (pamphlet)http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Common_Sense_%28pamphlet%29). [Edited out]

Amarasiri You keep going on and on about the Common Sense pamphlet, quoting Thomas Paine and god knows who else. I would agree with you that it would make a lot of sense to do it, and am curious as to why no one seems to be taking you up on your well-intentioned challenge. Perhaps this has not been lost sight of by the people who are organising the opposition campaign – I cannot believe that persons such as Mangala S., Eran W., Rathana Thera, even CBK are not even as we speak, getting their act together on getting the message to the masses that the incumbent regime must be sent home packing if Lanka is to be saved. What a pitiful situation we have been put in, after the major LTTE threat was successfully removed, albeit with a few serious questions about the methods. It is also good to note that there is an unofficial online poll going the rounds which pits King Kong vs MY3 and the latter seems to be the clear favourite, hands down… all good so far and hope the mmentum can be maintained. Back to the pamphlet – instead of repeating your message ad nauseam on CT space, why don’t you offer your services to the opposition campaign to do the framework of the pamphlet using your considerable depth of knowledge of facts and history (and writing ability) and then get someone within the MY3 campaign there to finesse it (there can be many manifestations of it to suit various audiences and occasions)? After all, it is far better for the campaign managers to have the responsibility to orchestrate distribution of the message, no?

if a president in office is defeated ..his term of office has also expired on the day of the polls He would then arrnage with the victor for a peaceful hand over of the office in the immeidate future. It’s not possible to run a country with a elected prsident in waiting and a defeated president clinging on to the office.

Yes… MR will not leave easily… Gota with his military and police powers will do what he could to keep the power within the family… What should be done to prevent thus.??… One possible thing is to get Sarath Fonseka to make (legal) plea to military and police and remind them of their responsibilities to maintain peace and security of the general public. This request should be directed to all levels of military and police personnel.. . Must be very legally bound statement , should repeat multiple times in general meetings… Please think about this or a better plan to reduce mass scale killings and unrest which is a very real possibility….

You cannot assume that the military and the police would remain loyal to Gota. He has messed them up too. Can anyone ever excuse Gota for the callous and disrespectful way he wrecked the funeral of the war hero General Janaka Perera. General Fonseka probably deserved his mistreatment from the Rajapakse brothers but it could have been achieved with dignity as, after all, he was a war hero. All of Gota’s interference with the judiciary, bringing on a plethora of injustices could not have pleased the police, at least the honest ones among them.

Its the job of the civil society to keep track of MaRa movemenets and then alert the International Community (IC) as well as UN/EU/Amnesty/HRC/UNHRC/Donors and make sure MaRa will play the game according to the rules. This commissioner of Elections is a joker and cannot believe he will conduct a fair election at all. Then with GoRa controlling the armed forces, they will be used to do whatever possible to deny MY3 the win. It is good to organize civil disobedience thru Social Media to control the damage caused by Rajapaksa junta and this will make them scare to death. Its MY3 all the way…

“”Already four violent attacks involving firearms against anti government activists have been unleashed by pro Mahinda gangs.” If that is the case then the opp central organiser should work out a chart of all villages towns or polling boot wise & create a score card 1-10 from discrete canvassing house to house as 1 and very open 10 right now. The opp first move of rejecting BBS is great and this should be applied to other rattons jumping ship for fear of losing their power and being exposed and ultimately in jail. This should have a grading to as above 1-10 of how many votes they can bring on their own standing not just the trend or who they are but whom they know would vote. Remember there is at least one solution to a problem and dont fall prey to any fear psychosis. Ofcourse its good to know the problems to have the solution. Nice article

MaRa’s days are numbered. If MaRa tries to stop more MPs and PC councilors crossing over, MaRa should be manhandled. To win elections in SL, you have to match thuggary with thuggary, mud with mud, life with life, poster with poster. That’s why Ranil is always in the opposition.

Foxes and she-goats and rabbits are lining up against the pride of lion. Is this going to be new Mahabharata or only one another of a one paragraph tale in the Aesop’s fables? Will traitors, CBK, Mangala, Maitri who all ran from Kings camp will bring him down because they have a new fox to consult them? Will Chandrika be success in taking back to UNP that Bandaranayake brought with him out? When the Gowravam( honor) in question it is always “Neeyum Naanumaa Kannaa?” (is that you and me in the ring, dear Kanna, one against the other?) Moonradi man Keedaan…… Valarththa en Kannannau….Thanthaiyin Nenchilile…..(Vamanan(Krishna dressed up like a Bahamian-Priest) asked only a three feet(leg) of land. Mr Ranaweerage is right about one thing. Those who gained, and they have gained much, are not going to allow some Johnny-come-lately opportunists to take away the golden goose that laid those lovely eggs without a fight. So wait and watch the feathers fly. As for our fresh new hero from the village, let us recap. Only a few days ago, the ‘common’ candidate was all yes sir, no sir, three bags full sir, with the King. He has been enjoying all the largesse that came from his position; his loyalty was taken for granted. He laughed and joked with the King as they sat around the table, pulled chicken and ate buriyani. This is the man who suddenly saw the light, and the opportunity, to do perhaps what he learnt when working at the side of the King. I think we should wait and see what his explanation for this about turn is BEFORE we put the champagne to cool in the ice-pettiya.

reading what you have to say perhaps its a probability. However time and tide waits for no man. (one of his photos shows him laughing like a jacka therefore he should undergo a lie test conducted by a psycho who could use the equipment to do that or it would be goo`ta all over again or uduran kana pakshaya dynasty once again to doodle. times are not that good for foreign assistance to come your way if you folk slip. Passa definitely has many a trick up his sleeve to call the race before time but if its planned and executed well the public can see the light once again. Gujarati owned Associated Press news north america carried out the canvassing 2 years ahead from yahoo comments to all local paper with trolls there modi talks about 10 stay even today while gandhi went over to sleep in cattle sheds to prove he is one of the people and lost. They copied Sky Murdock style.

So what did the HONOURABLE Maithripala Sirisens do all these past few years? Going up and down the country accompanied by a platoon of security and singing the praises of the Honourable MaRa. Suddenly he has decided that MaRa is not good enough. YES we need CHANGE, but is this the hero we have been waiting for? I think we should wait and let the HONOURABLE Maithripala explain why he changed from MaRa’s abithaya and see what his real plans are. I would also like to hear our HONOURABLE Ranil explain why he is prefers to remain non-playing-captain rather than take the lead.

To defeat Mahinda, anyone need to break his block vote which is rural , poor, singhala, Buddhist vote. Maithripala is tally with Singhala Buddhist factor, but he has to offer package for village voters because stripping presidency, independent commission, changing electoral system are not the issues popular in village. Those slogans are popular in urban middle class, educated voters.Cost of living, unemployment, No houses to live , drinking water etc will attract rural voters. Mahinda is still popular in village due to war victory. President Premadasa offer Janasaviya, 1 million houseS for houseless people etc, to attract rural voters. Maithripala campaign strategist should think about those options. Just because democracy slogan cannot defeat Mahinda.

For Maitre example to win the whole camp should carry out a vigorous campaign, United lying, spelling out at least minimum programme, in one voice. The incumbent president is a popular leader and you cannot take for granted that with a few cross overs you can win the race.

I’ve been consistently arguing for this point right from the beginning. First, Rajapaksas will try to manufacture a ‘victory’ through violence, ballot-box stuffing and other fraudulent methods. If that fails Gota is there to use alternative methods. In such circumstances, poor masses led by the working class is the only answer. Thus, mobilizing the masses in preparation for a possible military takeover is the central task. A united front of the Left should clearly anticipate this scenario, and use the election campaign to enlighten & organize the people along these lines. It should make people conscious of the issues that go far beyond the “abolition of Executive Presidency”. Socialists should clearly tell the people the necessity to carry forward the ‘regime change’ to a ‘system change’.

Socialists should accompany the fast rising democratic forces, however contradictory that process appear to be, without trying to split it, at this point of time. That’s the way to enlighten the masses and prepare them to confront a Gota-led military intervention. Also, the Left should campaign passionately for a ‘system-change’, without just stopping at a ‘regime-change’.
